YuGiOh - Would equipping a Piercing Card to your opponent's monster allow them to hurt the opponent?

The ruling of Piercing is that "if the equipped monster attacks a defense position monster, an amount of the difference is dealt to the opponent as battle damage. If it's your card, wouldn't the wording imply that the opponent you're duelling gets the damage?
